My overall research area focuses on maximising the performance of ruminants through dietary and management strategies designed to maximise economic production in an environmentally sustainable manner.  Specific research areas include, ruminant nutrition and rumen function, dietary manipulation to reduce environmental impact of ruminant production systems especially enteric methane emissions and nitrogen excretion, nutrition of the ewe during late pregnancy, immunity in newborn ruminants. Facilities include total gas production techniques and large scale in-vitro models to simulate rumen function, digestibility crates for dairy cows, beef cattle and sheep, plus respiration chambers and tracer techniques to measure in vivo methane production. My research group is focussed on the development of economically and environmentally sustainable ruminant production systems.
